World Whiskey Society has recently unveiled its latest creation: a Japanese single malt whisky finished in bourbon and ruby port barrels. Crafted in collaboration with Chip Tate, an icon in the whiskey industry often hailed as the "father of the American Single Malt," this release is poised to captivate whiskey enthusiasts globally.
The Making of a Unique Whisky
The new release from World Whiskey Society is a testament to international collaboration and expertise. This whisky is crafted from 100% Australian malted barley and distilled in Japan. Its distinctiveness is further enhanced through the finishing process in bourbon and ruby port barrels, a technique that imbues the spirit with a complex and intriguing flavor profile.
Chip Tate, known for his innovative spirit and craftsmanship, has played a pivotal role in this creation. His journey in the whiskey industry began with the founding of Balcones Distillery in Waco, Texas, in 2008. Despite a contentious departure from Balcones in 2014, Tate has continued to influence the industry. Currently serving as Master Distiller for Innovation at Foley Family Wines, he brings his extensive knowledge and creativity to this unique collaboration.
Tasting Notes and Availability
Bottled at a robust 102 proof, the World Whiskey Society Japanese Single Malt boasts a rich array of flavors. According to the brand, the whisky's nose is characterized by notes of wine-soaked ripe pear, crème brûlée, golden raisin, baking spices, and a rich umami character. On the palate, drinkers can expect dark brown bread and salted caramel, culminating in a long and dry finish.
Priced at $120, this limited-edition whisky is available for purchase online, with only 200 cases released. For fans who either live in or are visiting Texas and who are eager to meet Chip Tate and perhaps secure a signed bottle, he will be making appearances in select Texas retail shops.
A Legacy of Excellence
The World Whiskey Society, established in 2020, has quickly made a name for itself by seeking out unique distilleries worldwide and creating rare whiskey expressions. This new Japanese Single Malt is a part of their ongoing mission to push the boundaries of whiskey making, blending tradition with innovation.
Chip Tate's involvement in this project highlights his status as a pioneer in the industry. With nearly 150 national and international awards to his name, Tate continues to redefine the craft of distilling. His dedication to excellence and innovation has cemented his reputation as a leading figure in the whiskey world.
Alex Kogan, CEO of World Whiskey Society, expressed his excitement about the release: “It was an absolute honor and privilege to be able to work with the legendary Chip Tate to craft a one-of-a-kind Japanese Single Malt. We are beyond thrilled the day has come to release this unique, and super limited liquid as part of our Classic Collection.”
