The Glenturret Peat Smoke 2022

As a whisky lover with a passion for Scotch whisky, I'm excited to share my thoughts on The Glenturret 10 years old Peat Smoke whisky, which was released in 2022. The Glenturret distillery is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries, dating back to 1775. It's a small, traditional distillery located in the heart of the Scottish Highlands that has earned a reputation for producing some of the finest whiskies in the world. This 10-year-old expression is a perfect example of the quality and attention to detail that goes into every bottle of Glenturret whisky.

How it all started

The Glenturret distillery is located in the town of Crieff, in Perthshire, Scotland. It was founded in 1775 by a man named John Drummond, who was a member of a local family of whisky smugglers. The distillery changed hands several times over the years, and was eventually acquired by High Street Distillers in 1957.

In the years that followed, the Glenturret distillery continued to produce whisky using traditional methods, including floor malting, pot still distillation, and aging in oak casks. In 2018, the distillery was acquired by Lalique, a luxury goods company known for their exquisite crystal glassware.

Under Lalique's ownership, the Glenturret distillery has continued to produce high-quality whisky using traditional methods. The distillery's focus on quality and attention to detail has earned it a reputation as one of Scotland's premier whisky producers.

How it came to be

The Glenturret 10 years old Peat Smoke whisky is made using traditional methods that have been handed down through generations of distillers. The process begins with locally-sourced barley, which is soaked in water and allowed to germinate for several days in a process known as malting.

After the barley has germinated, it is dried over peat fires to give the whisky its distinctive smoky flavor. The malted barley is then ground into a coarse flour known as grist, which is mixed with hot water in a vessel known as a mash tun to create a sweet liquid known as wort.

The wort is then transferred to a washback, where yeast is added to begin the process of fermentation. The resulting liquid, known as wash, is then distilled in copper pot stills to create a spirit with an alcohol content of around 70%.

The new make spirit is then aged in oak casks for a minimum of 10 years to give it its rich, complex flavor. The Glenturret 10 years old Peat Smoke whisky is matured in a combination of first-fill and refill American oak casks, which gives it its distinctive smoky flavor and hints of vanilla and honey.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, The Glenturret 10 years old Peat Smoke whisky has a distinct smoky aroma, with notes of charred oak and roasted coffee beans. There are also hints of vanilla and honey, which add a touch of sweetness to the overall aroma.

On the palate, the whisky is rich and complex, with flavors of peat smoke, dark chocolate, and roasted nuts. There are also hints of vanilla and honey, which balance out the smoky flavors and add a touch of sweetness.

The finish is long and warming, with lingering flavors of smoke and oak.

Overall, The Glenturret 10 years old Peat Smoke whisky is a well-balanced and flavorful whisky that is sure to appeal to fans of smoky, peated whiskies.
